A state-of-the-art lab to secure safety

The Billerud expanded Packaging Development Center in Skärblacka is a comprehensive investment in expertise to guarantee safe and innovative packaging materials and solutions. Our lab engineers and their wide array of state-of-the-art equipment can perform a wide range of tests including real-life seal performance and bioburden analyses.

In 2019 the Skärblacka mill was developed into an international MG center to meet and exceed the demands of the future. In that transformation our lab facilities were greatly expanded to secure that we match the needs of our customers serving the health care sector as well as the food industry. We know that we must constantly add to that expertise to be able to challenge conventional packaging for a sustainable future.

Advanced seal testing
The Seal Lab section of the Packaging Development Center has over 40 years of experience in developing sterile barrier solutions and testing the right combination of film and paper to secure a safe direct seal. We help our customers choose the right type of medical paper, film and sterilisation. We can now also produce medical packaging under real-life circumstances on our in-lab thermoforming line.

Bioburden analysis
Sterile barrier papers, inner wrappings for surgical gloves and papers for food packaging can have bioburden requirements. As this is a growing demand from our customers, we have an ultra-modern Microbiology lab. Not very common for paper producers, but to help secure safety and bioburden control we knew this was vital.

Siliconising evaluations
To support our business within siliconised paper our team of engineers have access to a Release section in our Packaging Development Center. Here they can evaluate silicone coat weight and release performance.

Application assessments
Every day, our experts perform quality control on 100 paper samples from our machines. The samples are tested for more than 20 different paper properties. Everything to make sure our products meet the requirements and standards demanded by our customers.
