Degree project - Flow cytometry for rapid microbial analysis of process samples
Job description
Goal
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate and optimize the use of flow cytometry for microbial analysis of process samples from the pulp and paper industry.
Background
At Billerud, we are convinced that working together with other companies, universities and research institutes is the best way to tap into new thinking concerning improved packaging materials in a circular approach. The purpose of the department Innovation, Product and Application Development (IPAD) is to create new materials that can replace fossil-based materials with more sustainable alternatives based on forest raw materials. The major challenge for cellulosic materials is to improve certain properties, such as extensibility, strength or barriers to water vapour and other gases and to produce these materials in a resource and energy efficient way without impairing product safety.
Within the area of microbiology, the following challenge has been identified:
The demands related to product safety are high and one important factor is microbiology where the upper limit in the final board is well regulated. The microbiological analysis time for board samples is 48-72 h. Therefore, it is crucial to follow process parameters from a microbiological perspective and predict the result of the microbial load in the final board. One key process parameter for the prediction would be the microbial load in process samples however, that would require a rapid and reliable analysis method. The potential of flow cytometry to act as a rapid and reliable analysis method for process samples from the pulp and paper industry is yet to be evaluated.
Project
The work that will be carried out involve the following activities:
- Literature study on flow cytometry and microbiology for the pulp and paper industry
- Analysis of process samples using flow cytometry
- Compare flow cytometry results with results from conventional analysis
Timetable
The project preferably starts in September 2025 (or according to agreement). A detailed schedule will be defined together with the candidate.
Location
Location is at Billerud mill in Frövi.
