Our production process

Follow our production process from sourcing virgin fiber from sustainably managed forests to delivering eco-friendly packaging that challenges the conventional.

1. Forestry

Billerud manufactures packaging material using virgin fibre from softwood or hardwood. The Group only buys wood from well managed forests.

2. Debarking

The pulpwood is debarked. The bark is recycled as fuel.

3. Chips

The debarked wood is cut into chips.

4. Pulp production

The pulp is produced by cooking the chips with chemicals under pressure and at high temperature.

6. Paper production

Paper production is carried out in three stages: forming, pressing and drying.

5. Refining

The pulp is cleaned and bleached in cases where the end product requires this. After cooking, the pulp is washed and screened.

7. Paper reels and pulp packs

The finished and cut paper reels or the pulp are packaged for delivery to the customer.

8. Transport

Deliveries are made by sea, rail or road.

9. Converters

A large proportion of sales come from customers that convert Billerud’s packaging materials into various types of packaging.

10. Sustainable packaging

Billerud’s primary fibre-based packaging materials provide sustainable packaging that is able to challenge conventional packaging.
