For this year’s PIDA, a new international prize was introduced for the first time, the People’s Choice Grand Final Award. Here the general public could cast their vote on Facebook for their favourite packaging design project from the previous winners of each country. The four nominees were Shelby Gin (France), Buddies (Germany), Mankai (Sweden), and Lotus Marzipan (UK). And the design that in the end got the most likes and shares on Facebook was Shelby Gin, designed by the students Clément Reolon, Julie Perin, Sacha Berrier, Clémence Morenne and Hadrien Brigot of ESIReims in France.
We wanted to create a package for a bottle of Gin, because we found that there weren’t a lot of products like that on the market.
A design for the modern consumer
Shelby Gin is designed with the urban and contemporary consumer in mind. Inspired by the peacock, the students behind Shelby Gin want to give the consumer a unique unboxing experience.
“We wanted to create a package for a bottle of Gin, because we found that there weren’t a lot of products like that on the market. The concept itself is based on the peacock’s tail feathers, and also the colour. Our concept showed more when you open the box and it gives you a ”wow”-effect,” says Team Shelby Gin.
And about the award, they continue …: “We’re totally gonna have this in our CV. We think it’s really great to be able to win this price. We would also like to thank our school, BillerudKorsnäs, and everyone that liked and shared our packaging-video.”
Unboxing - a perfect theme for social media
For this year's PIDA the assignment was to create a sustainable, innovative and functional packaging design that offers a unique unboxing experience. To enter the PIDA award, the students had to make an unboxing video, showing the experience of unboxing their design – a new addition to the competition that helps spread the PIDA-word on social media internationally.
“With the People’s Choice Grand Final Award, we want to give PIDA an international touch. PIDA is not just a student competition. It is a way to bring students and industry closer together, and introduce talents to converters, brand owners and design agencies. Also, this year’s theme ”unboxing” was a perfect match for social media, says Lena Dahlberg, Manager Carton Solutionsat BillerudKorsnäs.”
