Purpose: 

This Safety Manager position is responsible for working with operations, maintenance, staff functions, and mill leadership to develop initiatives and programs promoting safe work practices, improvements as well as meeting all applicable safety and health regulations.  

Key Accountabilities:

  • Zero injuries is Billerud’s mission.
  • Provide leadership to support and assist all levels of management in achieving the facility and corporate goals for reduction of work-related injuries for both mill employees and contractors.
  • Lead in planning, creating, and implementing programs and processes to maintain a workplace that meets or exceeds federal and state safety requirements.
  • Expert in regulatory requirements, industry standards and local safety matters including integration of Health/Safety Best Practices into the mill.
  • Responsible for case management of all work-related injuries and maintaining compliance with the OSHA record keeping requirements, including accident reports, statistical summaries/calculations, injury classification, etc.
  • Coordinate safety and health standards training for all team members as well as fire, chemical, emergency, and first aid/CPR training for Emergency Response Team Members
  • Coordinate and provide resources for all mill, corporate, OSHA, and voluntary compliance audits.
  • Conduct safety inspections with OSHA compliance officers, insurance company representatives, local fire department, etc.
  • Record and follow up on their recommendations, maintain injury and other records required by OSHA, and develop the mill's investigative policies and procedures
  • Ensures a proactive approach to injury prevention.
  • Oversee and coordinate site security and fire suppression efforts.
  • Support mill Keys to Success.
  • Work with radiation safety officer to effectively manage a nuclear regulatory program.
  • Lead cross functional team’s (eg. ergonomic committee, central safety committee) and other safety/health related teams.
  • Support Process Safety Manager (PSM) program and ensure all applicable regulations are being met.

 

Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Effective communication and leadership skills as well as demonstrated abilities to champion change and influence others at all levels of the organization are required. 
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment with an excellent safety performance record is highly desired. 
  • Develop and expand an atmosphere where all team members feel responsible for safety and demonstrate it in their actions.
  • Ability to give encouragement, guidance, and direction to improve safety performance.
  • Ability to listen generously and practice open advocacy.
  • Ability to inspire and lead others toward identifying and achieving vision and goals.
  • Demonstrated leadership in Process Safety Management program improvements.

Personal qualities

Required Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or related field experience.
  • Proven leadership in an industrial safety environment.
