Towards 100% renewable packaging

We are innovating together with Tetra Pak to increase the renewable content of their packaging materials. Our common vision is 100% fibre-based and fully recyclable packaging.

Tetra Pak has introduced a new collaborative innovation model together with BillerudKorsnäs and leading paperboard producers, as well as research institutions, universities and start-ups aimed at tackling the food packaging industry’s sustainability challenges and develop sustainable packaging solutions together.

The vision is 100% fibre-based and fully recyclable packaging.

"We still have, of course, some steps to go before we are there from a technical perspective, but we work as one project team on this because the only way that we can solve them is to do this together.” says Malin Ljung Eiborn Head of Sustainability and Public Affairs at BillerudKorsnäs.

We have to act together to transform the industry.
Eva Gustavsson, Vice President Materials & Package at Tetra Pak.

“We want a package that is hundred percent from renewable resources. We need a lot of innovation to find these new materials that can create a good barrier. And there are so many challenges, so much innovation to do.  ”, says Eva Gustavsson, Vice President Materials & Package at Tetra Pak.

The collaborative innovation takes the form of a number of defined projects where experts from the two companies work together. BillerudKorsnäs also work together under the auspices of Treesearch, a Swedish collaboration platform for fundamental research, knowledge and competence-building in the field of new materials and specialty chemicals from forest raw material. It involves academia, industry, private foundations and the Swedish government, and aims to turn pioneering fundamental research into high-tech innovations to meet the climate challenge.

“Treesearch is important because we can get advanced research on new materials and new applications, but also because we have an opportunity to build competence, with skilled people coming into the industry who will be able to develop more innovative products in the future”, says Malin Ljung Eiborn.

We believe that working together with Tetra Pak and the involved experts is the best way to capture new opportunities and co-create the future of sustainable packaging.
