Sustainability Recycable raw material

Paper is part of an eternal cycle of nature in which the sun is the driving force. This cycle is in balance with other natural cycles and contributes, among other benefits, to reduced consumption of fossil fuels.

It all starts with the raw material, the forest. Trees grow in a never-ending process powered by the sun. Through photosynthesis the sun’s energy is captured and, together with carbon dioxide, water and other nutrients in the soil, is converted into a growing biomass. The fibres in wood can be used to make paper products. After it is used, paper can be recycled to make new paper or burnt to generate energy. In the latter case it means reducing consumption of fossil fuels such as coal and oil.

The ability of trees to capture carbon dioxide released from combustion and use it in photosynthesis means that the natural cycle is completed. Because trees are renewable and modern forestry methods are environment-friendly, we can say that our forests are used without being consumed. For every tree felled in Sweden 3 new ones are planted. It is a fact that Sweden has never had as many trees as it has now in the 21standard century.
