Sustainability ISO 14001 and IPPC

A certification is an independent documentation of activities and processes. The certification process sets rules for how to work with environmental aspects. It therefore provides good support for environmental management.

Work on the environment has always been important for Billerud’s mills. All of the company’s mills have ISO 14001 certification.

ISO 14001

The International Standards Organisation’s rules for a global environmental standard have been in force since 1996. The standard sets a series of different requirements that must be fulfilled to achieve certification. Continuous planning and implementation of controls and improvements are the main demands. Other priorities are the introduction of an environmental management system and environmental policy.

Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC)

This European Directive is for the prevention of pollution to the environment for certain industrial activities. It applies an integrated approach, which means considering environmental effects from emissions to Air, Land & Water together, to achieve a high level of environmental protection as a whole.

The Directive requires the use of Best Available Techniques(BAT). BAT ensures the best environmental solutions are employed, when balancing the cost to the operator against the benefits to the environment.

EC Member Countries must implement the Directive by 2007.
