What is an environmental management system and how is it integrated at Billerud?
Environmental awareness is an important part of our business. Trying at all times to minimise the environmental impact and improve the use of resources are everyday activities. To make environmental work easier and more systematic, an environmental management system has been introduced. This means that the entire company is involved and rules and procedures are established for managing environmental work. Some of the key points are:
- Establishing an environmental policy
- Producing environmental goals and action plans
- Establishing environmental impacts from raw material to supplied product
- Meeting legal requirements and other requirements
- Establishing procedures and instructions to ensure that the environmental impact is minimised
- Training staff
- Assessing suppliers
All Billerud’s mills have ISO 14001 certification. The Beetham mill in the UK was the first paper mill in Europe to obtain a permit from Integrated Pollution Prevention Control, IPPC.
The environmental management system is audited regularly by external environmental auditors to ensure it meets the correct standards.
